Nice tips.

By the way, I compiled that EV chart you linked to into a few simple rules that capture ALL the profitable hands (i.e. EV>0):

If unsuited, play:
1. Any pair 55 or higher.
2. Any Queen with Jack or higher
3. Any King or Ace with 10 or higher

If suited, play:
1. Any Ten, Jack or Queen with 9 or higher
2. Any King with 8 or higher
3. Any Ace with 3 or higher

Also, if we consider EV of 1 or higher as very profitable hands, then we should raise them. The rule is, raise any

1. pair QQ or higher or AK suited.

By the way, I featured some insights from Poker author Alan Schoonmaker on my blog about Poker and Critical Thinking.

Check it out. Cheers!

Hey Ksnyde,

I hope and pray that it's nothing serious. I think it's probably poker related, like all those gulps when you're racing for your chips type of thing...lol.

In any event I hope that you and your family/loved ones have a happy and healthy holidays!

Good to see that you're building your BR up. Keep grinding it out and don't be discouraged with the variance.

I don't know if you're playing on Stars or not but they have these double or nothing SNGs that are really great for building BR.

In any event, good luck and i'll be looking foward to your next installment.

Hey Snyde,

Another book that I found helpful was the Tao of Poker. Very good book about dealing with the ups and downs of poker. You should definitely look at that book.

As for the other players, well most of them will call with marginal hands and I've mostly dealt with them by just allowing them to play their game and hope that they stay so I'll get a chance to stack them.

By saying stuff like "nice catch" or "you lucky SOB" is really counterproductive. You want them to think that they're playing well. You want them to think that they're out playing you because the longer they stay to play the more opportunities they'll have to screw up.

If you say that they're getting lucky, they might agree and just leave with their profits and you'll never get a chance to break them.

Ahh...I've read that book about 3 times. It's hard to change 37 years of being an ultra-competitive-hot-head, but I'm well aware of the negative side effects associated with tilt.

I hear ya with the raising. What I kinda decided to do was limp/call a lot with big hands if stack sizes and player behavior led me to believe that someone else would do the raising for me. It's been working fairly well. There's some players who raise over 30% of the time - so if I have QQ UTG, I'll limp...get a few other limpers behind, a bozo who tries to steal, and then I come over top and club the poor bastard over the head. I do this only with QQ, KK, and AA - and so far it's been pretty much magic. In the past I've raised with those hands and people will call, then I have to think about what they have and play the hand out of position after the flop. It's a horrible and frustrating position to be in. If somebody flops 2 pair, there's no way for you to know. If you get it all in heads up, you're generally in good shape and pick up lots of extra bets as well as a full stack.
